How to Check Campground Power Before Plugging In Your RV

Connecting Alice to campground power always seemed simple. We turned the pedestal breaker off, connected our 30-amp power cord, and flipped the breaker back on. If the electricity worked, we assumed everything was fine.

A campground pedestal can look normal while still having unsafe voltage or a wiring problem. After adding a smart RV surge protector, we learned that it could check the power before we connected our van. The order of connection matters.

Our original routine protected us from connecting the power cord while the breaker was on. However, it told us nothing about the electricity entering Alice. We could not see the voltage or recognize a wiring problem before power reached the van.

How to Check Campground Power Before Plugging In

1. Inspect the Power Pedestal

Look for burn marks, melted plastic, corrosion, moisture, or a damaged outlet. The breaker and outlet should feel securely mounted. Do not remove covers or touch exposed wiring.

2. Turn the Breaker Off

Switch off the pedestal breaker before inserting the surge protector. This reduces the chance of arcing while making the connection.

3. Connect the Surge Protector by Itself

Plug the surge protector directly into the pedestal without attaching the RV cord. Turn the breaker on and allow the unit to analyze the power.

4. Read the Display and Indicator Lights

How to Read an RV Surge Protector Display

In our campground photograph, the display shows approximately 122 volts, 2.7 amps, and 331 watts. Alice was already connected when we took the picture, which explains why the amperage and wattage were above zero. The numbers also make sense together. Multiplying 122 volts by 2.7 amps equals about 329 watts, close to the displayed reading.

The four lights above the screen check the pedestal wiring. The numbers describe the incoming power and electrical load. The light pattern warns us about possible wiring faults.

What Voltage Is Safe for an RV?

Most 30-amp RV systems use a nominal 120-volt power supply, but the reading will not always remain at exactly 120 volts.

The manual for our Vantecable protector lists an approved range of 104 to 132 volts. A reading below 104 volts produces an E1 warning. A reading above 132 volts produces an E2 warning. Our campground reading of 122 volts was within that range.

These limits apply to our model. Check the manual supplied with your protector before relying on its readings or warning codes.

The indicator lights can identify an open ground, open hot, open neutral, reversed wiring, or another fault. We compare the illuminated pattern with the circuit-analyzer chart printed on the protector. Only the normal “Power On” pattern indicates that the wiring check passed.

Signs You Should Not Use the Power Pedestal

Not every warning appears on the display. We would also leave Alice disconnected if we noticed:

  • Burn marks, melted plastic, corrosion, or moisture
  • A loose outlet that does not hold the plug securely
  • Buzzing, crackling, smoke, or a burning smell
  • A breaker that repeatedly trips
  • Voltage outside the protector’s approved range
  • An error code or incorrect wiring-light pattern

If the pedestal fails the check, we turn off the breaker and photograph the warning. We can show the campground staff what the protector detected and request an inspection or another campsite.

Repeat the complete check at the new power source before connecting Alice. We would not bypass a warning by plugging the van directly into the pedestal.
